What is postpartum depletion?

Postpartum depletion is a term used to describe the physical and emotional exhaustion experienced by women after giving birth. This condition is often characterised by feelings of overwhelming fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and a general sense of depletion.

It is believed to be caused by the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the hormonal and emotional changes that occur during this time. Postpartum depletion can have a significant impact on a woman's well-being and ability to care for her newborn. It is important for new mothers to prioritise self-care and seek support from healthcare professionals, family, and friends to address and manage postpartum depletion effectively.

If you are in the depths of postpartum depletion the idea of taking any free time from your day to exercise or partake in wellbeing practices can be completely overwhelming. Small manageable changes are the best way to start, you could try a 1km walk one week, increasing to 2km the following week and listening to your body and your available energy levels as you increase.

Stay close to friends and family and never be afraid to ask for help.
